Drinking Driving Program (DDP)
Often upon sentence for driving while intoxicated or driving while impaired, the court will order the defendant to enter and complete a drunk driving program (DDP). The DDP Program involves 7 weekly classroom sessions. Each session consist of 2 to 3 hours for a total of 16 hours. While most will complete the program upon completion of the 16 hours, some participants will be referred for evaluation and subsequent treatment. In New York, anyone convicted of an alcohol or drug related driving violation will have their license suspended or revoked. The Drinking Driver Program will often help those convicted of Alcohol related offenses restore their driving privileges sooner. Often by enrolling in the drinking driver program, participants will be automatically eligible for a conditional license.
There is a $75 fee upon enrolling in the Drinking Driver Program payable to the NYS DMV. Once in the program, there is an additional fee of $225 or less, payable to the program you attend.
You may be dropped from the Drinking Driver Program for failing to attend class, failing to go for a required evaluation or treatment, not participating satisfactorily in the program, or failing to pay the program fees. If dropped from the program, you will lose your conditional license, and may be subject to additional penalties from the court.
Those dropped from the program may not re-enter unless they obtain a written letter of consent from the Drinking Driver Program director. If permitted to re-enter, a $50 re-entry fee, payable to the DDP will be required.
